Founded by Dr. Lakeysha “Key” Hallmon, No One Is Self-Made grew from a philosophy that has shaped her work for years: meaningful success is never achieved alone.

As an educator turned social entrepreneur, Dr. Key saw firsthand the barriers facing Black entrepreneurs and recognized that talent alone was not enough. Business owners also needed access to customers, resources, mentorship, capital, and a community willing to actively support their growth. That realization inspired her to launch The Village Market in 2016, creating an ecosystem designed to connect entrepreneurs with the people and opportunities needed to thrive.

Her experiences building The Village Market, The Village Retail, and Our Village United became part of the foundation for No One Is Self-Made: Build Your Village to Flourish in Business and Life. Through personal lessons, practical guidance, and the principles behind her Village Model, Dr. Key challenges the myth of the self-made success story and shows how intentional community and collective support can help people flourish in business, leadership, and life.

At the center of the movement is a phrase that has become synonymous with Dr. Key's work: “Support is a Verb.” It is a reminder that community requires action, whether that means sharing knowledge, opening doors, investing resources, purchasing from a business, or using your strengths to help someone else move forward.

No One Is Self-Made is ultimately an invitation to rethink what success looks like. Rather than climbing alone, Dr. Key encourages us to build villages strong enough for everyone to rise, because what we create together can reach further than what any one person can build alone.
